South Australian Local Travel Secrets
Adelaide, South Australia, Australia Ali, Jun 21, 2005 03:13 PM
Just like their neighbours in Victoria, South Australians are sportier than those in New South Wales, who favour walking and relaxing on the beach. South Australians rate their top activity as watching and playing sport, with an overwhelming love of AFL.
The top ten experiences, as indicated by South Australia?s ?Local Gurus? are as follows:
1. Sport ? just like most Aussies, South Australians love their sport, particularly AFL. Everything from local netball to dragon boat racing was worthy of a mention, with specific emphasis on events and arenas such as the Clipsal 500 and AAMI Stadium.
2. Rundle Mall ? for the ultimate shopping experience, South Australians love visiting the 600 plus stores in Rundle Mall.
3. Museums ? to appreciate the rich history of South Australia, locals suggested a trip to one of the state?s many museums. Travellers are encouraged to visit everything from the rural Koppio Smithy Museum to the South Australian Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide.
4. Beach ? whether you want the perfect romantic backdrop, a fun family destination or a great way to get out and about without spending a cent, South Australians suggest the beach. Beautiful beaches that topped the list included Glenelg and beaches at Victor Harbor, Kangaroo Island and Robe.
5. Walking ?
whether it be a sunset stroll in historic Semaphore, a bushwalk through the Flinders Ranges or an historic hike along the Heysen Trail, walking comes in at number five.
6. Adelaide?s history ? to get a taste for Adelaide?s history, respondents suggested exploring places such as Hahndorf and the Migration Museum, and also recommend getting involved in the annual Adelaide Festival of the Arts.
7. Shopping in Marion ? for a convenient, enjoyable shopping experience locals highly recommended Marion ? particularly the Westfield complex which also incorporates cinemas, restaurants and bars and a ten pin bowling centre.
8. Fine dining ? South Australians love to indulge in a great meal, whether it is from the local bistro or a five star dining experience. Interestingly many respondents nominated various ?eat streets? rather than single restaurants. Examples include Jetty Road, Unley Road, Henley Square and Gouger Street.
9. Adelaide Oval ? watching a cricket game or footy match at Adelaide Oval rated highly as a must-do experience for visitors to South Australia.
10. Parks and gardens ? the natural surrounds of South Australia can be enjoyed by exploring one of the many beautiful parks and gardens. Great suggestions included the Japanese Himeji Gardens, Botanic Gardens of Adelaide
and the Belair National Park.
In addition to this top ten, people from SA were asked to share specific secrets for great adventure ideas, hot places to shop, where to wine and dine, fantastic family destinations and romantic getaways. South Australians offered unique suggestions such as the WOMADelaide music festival in Botanic Park, enjoying fine wine tastings in the Barossa Valley, house boating and water ski on the Murray River and whale watching in Victor Harbour.
