Tasmania's Local Travel Secrets

Whilst Tasmanians from the northeast are more likely to enjoy spa treatments and trips to the museum, those from the northwest are lovers of the beach and the bush, and those from the south are likely to be found city and shoreline strolling.
Not surprisingly all Tasmanians were lovers of the great outdoors, valued Tassie?s heritage and history, and of course were very passionate about the AFL!
Tasmania?s top ten experiences, as indicated by its ?Local Gurus?:
1. Walking ? whether bushwalking in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair or Freycinet national parks, through the west coast village of Strahan, along Boat Harbour Beach or in the treetops of the Tahune Air Walk, walking came up number one.
2. Port Arthur Historic Site ? one of Tasmania?s most treasured tourist sites, Port Arthur is held in high esteem by locals who love the place for its rich history and culture, favouring the convict site ghost tours as a must-do activity
3. Footy ? just like most Aussies, Tasmanians love their footy. Whether playing or just watching, AFL ranked especially high in all regions of Tasmania.
4. Hobart ? Tasmania?s capital has so much to offer, and Tasmanians know it. A preferred activity was shopping, with dining out also a favourite, especially at Mures Seafood Restaurant!
5. Baths ? for
the ultimate in relaxation, Tasmanians love a visit to their local baths. The Aquarius Roman Baths in Launceston rated highly, with the Savoy Baths in Hobart also a favourite.
6. Dining ? with the vast array of fresh product available in Tasmania, it?s no wonder Tasmanians love their food. Whether it is fish and chips with the family from Hobart?s Fish Frenzy, a leisurely lunch in Peppermint Bay, or a romantic dinner for two at the award winning Fee and Me in Launceston, there are plenty of fantastic dining experiences to choose from.
7. Markets ? keen shoppers throughout Tasmania are big fans of the great markets on offer, with Saturday?s Salamanca Market especially popular.
8. Family days on the coast ? Aussie families love the beach, and Tasmanians are certainly no exception. Favourite family beach destinations are Bicheno, Bruny Island and Coles Bay.
9. Museums ? a tribute to the fascinating history of Tasmania, the many museums on offer are great cultural points of interest. Some of the museums mentioned included the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Museum, at Devonport, Hobart?s Maritime Museum and the Living History Museum of Aboriginal Cultural heritage at Cygnet.

Tasmanians are proud of their heritage. Popular sites included the Aboriginal heritage site at the Rocky Cape National Park and the historic town of Richmond.
