A Sydneysider's Guide
Sydney, New South Wales, Australia Ainslie, Oct 31, 2005 07:34 AM
I thought with this review I might take a little bit of a flip approach to the average article. As a born and bred Sydney-Sider who lives in the city, I thought I might be able to offer a few tips regarding accommodation and eating out in Sydney for people travelling here from inter-state and over seas.
Firstly I should probably start with where to stay during your visit? Here in Sydney we have everything from cheap as chips backpackers accommodation to world class 5 star hotels with stunning harbour views. You can either opt to stay right in the buzz of it all, in the CBD or for a more relaxing holiday why not chill out at Manly or Bondi Beaches (Bondi has the Swiss Grand which is great, and is also a great place for people watching). Personally I would stay in the CBD, there is heaps of great restaurants, China Town, night life, shopping (The QVB) and heaps of attractions/museums for the kids close by and access to other areas of Sydney is fairly easy and exceptionally pleasant if your travel around the harbour by ferry.
My favourite hotel I have stayed in, in Sydney is ?The Grace?, it is beautiful inside and out and boasts an ultra convenient location. It has every amenity you could possibly require such as a full gym, lap pool, sauna and spa, and the rooms are spacious
with the most comfortable king sized bed I have ever slept in away from home.
Now for my favourite tip??eating out in Sydney?.and there are tons of great places to choose from. And I think for this I might just list a few of my favourite eateries I have been to lately:
* The Sydney Fish Markets ? Many people think this is just a place to buy great, fresh produce (which it is) however it is also a great place to go for lunch, where the vendors cook up the most amazing seafood, fresh out of the ocean.
* Doyle?s Watsons Bay ? I thought since I was on the topic of seafood this would be the next logical place to go. If you are even the slightest bit of a foodie, this is a must do experience whilst visiting Sydney, especially in summer. There are two Doyle?s at Watsons Bay ? the Beach and Wharf restaurants, personally I love both and the view is spectacular from both and for my money there is no better way to spend an afternoon.
* Norton Street, Leichhardt ? Yes this is a street not an actual restaurant but I have so many favourites it is hard to narrow down to one?. This pocket of Sydney houses some of the most delicious Italian food in Sydney (which personally is my favourite type of food) and I have never once had a bad dining experience on Norton Street. Although I must admit
my very favourite restaurant is Bar Italia, it consistently serves simple but amazing food for a great price and also offers very enticing gelato. Word from the wise though, I don?t think it takes bookings and fills up really quickly on weekends so you may want to get there early. The other thing I love about this entire area is that it has a really friendly vibe and due to the large Italian population it has a warm village atmosphere.
* King Street Wharf, City ? This is a great new restaurant/bar precinct down near Darling Harbour and if you take a short stroll along the wharf you will find that there is something for everyone. My favourite is La Cita, which is part restaurant, part bar and serves amazing Latin fare in a relaxed environment. Great food, drinks along with salsa dancing on the upper level makes for a great evening.
Hope there is something all you intrepid travellers can try from this review!
